Dehradun is located in north India between the Ganga and Yamuna, two of the holiest rivers of India. Nestled in an unusually wide long Doon valley within the Shivalik range in the foothills of western Himalayas, it is the capital of the state of Uttrakhand also referred to as the “Land of Gods”.

Known for its mild climate and serene nature, some of the most important Hindu pilgrimages like Char Dham, Haridwar, Rishikesh are in close proximity to Dehradun. It is home to some of the most premier educational institutions since colonial days. One of the most famous hill stations of India Mussoorie is just 35 km from Dehradun. It also works as a base for some of the most beautiful trekking destinations in the Western Himalayas. Apart from the above Dehradun is renowned for its agricultural produce - though its mango, Lichis are famous in the country, Dehradun Basmati rice has found fame all across the globe.            

History of Dehradun goes back to 5000 years – it’s existence is referred to in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is been mentioned that great teacher Guru Dronacharya had his abode here. An integral part of the erstwhile Garhwal kingdom, it has also been part of Gurkha kingdom briefly until they lost the war against the British East India Company. One can take day hikes in and around Dehradun, explore some of the sites of interest when here. If you are a birding or wildlife enthusiast then Dehradun certainly will excite you.
