Abhaneri

Abhaneri, Rajasthan

About 95 km short of Jaipur one takes a 7 km detour from the main highway to get to this sleepy village of Abhaneri. One of the oldest settlements in Rajasthan, one can visit the temple of the local deity Goddess of Happiness and Mirth here. Temple is now in ruins and pieces of sculpture showing a fine degree of craftsmanship lie scattered around. However, the highlight of the visit to this place is to see 10th-century Baoris (step-well) and most awesome in Rajasthan. It is believed that the well is an indigenous invention of the locals for rainwater harvesting. This thirteen-level stepwell is well fortified with flights of steps on the three sides is an interesting piece of architecture.
